Pick a countertop that will be compatible with the way live and the way you use your space. Every client I know wants something gorgeous, but they always ask for something easy to maintain. There are so many options, so let’s dive in, and see what option is best for you.

Granite

Granite is probably the most common luxury item in every American home today. A natural stone, and comes in a variety of colors. It’s easy to clean and maintain. Granite doesn’t scratch easily. It’s also heat resistant, so hot pots can be placed on top without fear of blistering or cracking. However, granite countertops are expensive, but they do increase your real estate value.

Quartz

Quartz is an engineered stone, and no longer competing with natural stone like it once did. Quartz is paving it’s own mark, a hard surface easy to care for and maintain. Unlike granite, quartz doesn’t have porous qualities, so it doesn’t absorb stains. It’s also very durable and doesn’t scratch easily. May be found in a variety of colors and patterns similar to granite, but at a more affordable cost.

Marble

Marble is a luxurious natural stone. When cared for and maintained properly, it will last a lifetime. Marble is a gorgeous stone, and each slab looks unique. While marble is fairly accessible, it still is very expensive. It can be heat resistant, but due to it’s porous qualities will stain easily. Marble can also be prone to easy scratches.

Soapstone

Soapstone is another exquisite natural stone. Requires minimal maintenance, it’s easy to clean, is non-porous so it will not stain or harbor bacteria. May scratch or chip easily with heavy use. It comes in a variety of different textures. Soapstone is a great choice for a rustic, or a country kitchen because it’s natural and warm look and feel.

Butcher Block

Butcher block is an eco-friendly and sustainable option for countertops. You can achieve a show stopping design with many options as you can easily customize shapes, colors, and finishes. It adds a warm touch and look to the space. The main con with this type of counter would be maintaining it properly to prevent any water damage. May scratch and dent easier, but will repair easily.

Concrete

Concrete counters can be customized for any kitchen style and size. Concrete is desirable because it’s indestructible, doesn’t scratch and is heat resistant. The downfall is that concrete is susceptible to cracking, but the cracks can be repaired. It can also weight down on your cabinets and home. Concrete makes for an easy to clean and maintain option.

Tile

Using tile for countertops is a great way to add color to your space. Tile is also durable and affordable. It is easy to maintain and keep clean. It is also heat and scratch resistant. Tile can crack or chip, but the upside is you only replace the damaged tiles.
